CAGLIARI, SARDINIA INTERNATIONAL KEELBOAT TEAM RACING REGATTA
Day 1 GBR Royal Thames Yacht Club takes the lead after 16 dramatic races. Not all easy wins for this very experienced team with rival GBR The Royal Yacht Squadron being the only team to take a win off the leaders. Without doubt the most demandig race for the umpires was between Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (ITA) and Eastern Yacht Cub from the USA. The teams had met twice but it was the second race that the Italians threw everything at the American visitors to clinch the much needed win that allowed them to move into second place.
The Cagliari event is a new addition to the very active 2 vs 2 keelboat team racing (2K) circuit, with events in the USA, Australia, Singapore and across Europe.
This new event aimed at more senior teams has attracted teams from the Royal Yacht Squadron (GBR), Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (ITA), Bayerischer Yacht Club (GER), Royal Thames Yacht Club(GBR,) Eastern Yacht Club (USA) and the host Cagliari.
The event team lead by Eng. Stefano Liguori and supported by the Rotary Club of Calgiari and the Ichnusa Rowing Club aims to promote Cagliari as both an amazing city and a great racing venue. (Well Luna Rosa would agree on both of these) and given the enthusiasm of the sailors a return visit with friends and family is in order. Given the tradegy of events in the Ukraine, the organisers and sponsors will be donating to support the Ukrainian refugees sheltering in Sardinia.
As with all 2K events there is a big emphasis on fun social and great venues. Tonight despite the sins on the water the teams are having their Gala dinner at the Convent Saint Giuseppe. If it is anything like the feast at the reception there could be problems weighing in tomorrow… but fortunately 2K has dispensed with that rule.
Racing will start again tomorrow at 1300.
