CAGLIARI, SARDINIA INTERNATIONAL KEELBOAT TEAM RACING REGATTA
Day 2 GBR's Royal Thames Yacht Club maintains the lead after 32 dramatic races with only one additional loss, this time to the USA’s Eastern Yacht Club. The teams now very much back in form after a long absence were increasingly equally matched making for some truly amazing races. The short leg between Mark 1 and the offset offered opportunities for some pretty scary gybe backs against opponents innocently rounding the first mark.
This year 2K allows boats but not people to touch marks… a very welcome change and one that all quickly took advantage. But as always it is the final run where the game is at its tightest. No one is safe with 2 J24’s covering hard from astern. Many a race which at the last mark seemed an easy win was lost by failing to hold the left on the run, or coordinating the defence.
Our Race Officer Costanzo Villa and his team had photo finish after photo finish to deal with as the battle went to the line, with several races decided by protests on the line.
The local team in their very first 2K Regatta managed to gain 3 wins against Bavaria, Eastern YC and the Royal Yacht Squadron.
I forgot to mention the conditions. Champagne sailing both yesterday and today… great breeze and very steady with racing within a few meters of an Italian Submarine and various escort vessels… so a lot to see as well as to enjoy.
Racing finishes tomorrow, but first another great party.
